Lore Olympus Vol 1. By Rachel Symthe Review

Writer's picture: Luna BurgessLuna Burgess

I read this as a webtoon for the longest time. When I heard the Author was putting out physical copies I absolutely had to have it. I loved reading to the point where I stopped keeping up with the webtoon. I enjoyed going back and rereading this story or at least volume 1. I love how contrasting the characters are and how dark Hade's color schemes are while Persephone is the light and very bright colors. It shows how different they are as characters.

Spoilers Ahead

TRIGGER WARNING: mention of SA, and drugs A retelling of Hades and Persephone. I enjoy the graphic novel aspect of it because you can see the difference between Hades is so dark compared to Persephone. He sees her at a party being through by Zeus and Hera. He says she puts Aphrodite to shame and Aphrodite hears this. Aphrodite texts Eros to come to the party to help her deal with this issue. Eros drugs her and puts her in the trunk of Hades car. Eros regrets his actions but says Aphrodite’s word is law. This was something that threw me off the first time I read this volume because it’s very early on. Persephone wakes up at Hades home in the underworld drunk and asking him not to tell her mom. We see the green house that her mom made for her and we see her locked inside. We see One of hades pets who growls at Persephone. Hades shows up to stop Cerberus from eating Persephone but she proves she didn’t need saving. Hades gives her this gorgeous pink coat. She wears it and he allows her to keep it. They talk for a bit and he tells her it’s his fault she ended up in the underworld. We then learn why Eros does whatever Aphrodite tells him to which is because he doesn’t want her to hurt Psyche. He has an apartment where him and Psyche live together after he was meant to make her fall in love with the ugliest creature. Her sisters come to visit and put dark and evil thoughts into her head. They present her with a dagger and it breaks his heart because she actually chooses to try to use it. Eros tells Artemis and Persephone the whole story. Persephone comforts him while he cry’s after she texts Hades. Eros is forgiven and he takes her shopping after he sees Hades number in her phone. We meet Artemis’s brother and this is where I am going to go ahead and put a trigger warning due to SA. Apollo is a shitty character in this story who doesn’t take no for an answer. Persephone gets to spend time realizing that she likes Hades and that he doesn’t feel the same as others. Apollo sneaks into Persephone’s room after she went to sleep and kissed her. She tells him she is in training to be a sacred virgin. He continues to pressure her. She agreed because he kept pressuring her. She lets it happen not that she wanted it to because that was far from the truth. But she texts Hades immediately after cutting her hair. He immediately calls her once she sends the text. This is where volume 1 ends. This is another one of my shorter reviews as it was written for Instagram which you should follow if you are interested in other updates about my reviews. This is a book I am so happy to own as a physical copy of and can't wait to get VOL 2 as I have it preordered.
